Wingo

I loved these salt rivers more than I loved the sea; I loved the movement of tides more than I loved the fury of surf. Something in me was congruent with this land.
-Pat Conroy
The Wingo family in Pat Conroy’s book, The Prince of Tides, had a lifelong affinity for lowcountry estuaries. Ben Wells has a similar attachment to Georgia salt marshes and barrier islands. This attachment began on Tybee Island, GA and has continued to the Coffee Bluff community. Coffee Bluff’s southside Savannah location provides access to Ossabaw Sound, the south end of Wassaw Island, and the north end of Ossabaw Island. These uninhabited islands seem remote, but are a relatively short boat ride away!
Ben is a marine science teacher in Savannah, part-time island host and naturalist with The Ossabaw Island Foundation, a boat captain and volunteer with Wassaw Island’s Caretta Research Project, a part-time boat captain for Bull River Cruises, and a member of the Coffee Bluff Marine Rescue Squadron. Ben has earned his C.A.R.E. certification through the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service, an education degree from the University of Georgia, and a Marine and Environmental Sciences degree from Savannah State University. Ben would love to share a little of the wild and beautiful Georgia coast with you!
